grand cru single estate leaf tea
Made of the tender pickings from the new leaves in spring. Zesty and full of youthful vitality, biodynamic First Flush Darjeeling is prized for its characteristic astringent flavour and light golden liquor. The result is the grand cru of teas, made amidst great fanfare to mark the start of a new season. First Flush is limited in supply as it depends on the prevailing weather conditions.
The tea is grown at Makaibari, the first biodynamic tea estate in the world and the last owner-managed estate in the district, situated 3-4000 ft high up in the Himalayas. The estate is protected on all sides by lush virgin rainforests and is the home and livelihood to a community of 1700 people, a family of panthers and richly diverse wildlife. 66% of the acreage is undisturbed rainforest where tea grows in harmony with the area’s natural ecological system.
Enjoy: Allow one level teaspoon of tea per person. Pour on freshly boiled water and infuse for up to 3 minutes.
Ingredients: Fairtrade Black Tea. All ingredients are biodynamic and organic.

Demeter - The Demeter logo is the symbol for biodynamic products. Biodynamic farming is a very special form of organic farming, founded in the 1920's and practised worldwide. It is the highest standard for sustainable agriculture and is often described as 'organic plus' as each farm is unique and self-sustaining, in balance with soil, plant, animal and cosmic processes. Biodynamic farmers use specially formulated energising herbal compost preparations and a lunar calendar to help them determine when to sow and harvest. Biodynamic agriculture was conceived in the 20th century by the philosopher Rudolph Steiner.
Fairtrade - the Fairtrade mark guarantees international standards for fair and socially responsible trade with producers in developing countries. The price paid to tea estates includes a premium which is used by the community for social, economic, educational and medical improvements.
